It was meant to be…

In my 3rd year at University studying Broadcast Journalism, I was in need of money so I applied for a part time position at Boots. At my interview the lady said “you’ve got great skin, would you like to work on the No.7 counter?” I replied “what’s that?” After explaining it was £2 more an hour, I was sold. I began foundation matching and learning about make up and skincare and quite enjoyed it.

2 weeks into my position a lady approached me and asked if I would like to come for an interview for Mac Cosmetics. I replied “what’s MAC?”. I had no idea about beauty, make up or the industry I was about to be engulfed in. After 2 weeks at No.7 I began working as a Cashier for Mac Cosmetics, whilst 4 weeks from finishing my degree at Media City. Whilst working for Mac, I began doing more and more make up, taking on freelance jobs for extra cash and building a steady clientele whilst becoming a firm favourite with some local celebrities such as Helen Flanagan who often visited me at the Mac Counter.

I was now 1 week from finishing my degree and on my final placement in London for 1 week at Heat Magazine. After day 1 of my placement I hated it but knew I only had 6 more days to go. Whilst in London I received a call off a friend asking me to do make up for a high profile shoot for the daily mail with I’m A Celeb contestant and former miss GB Amy Willerton. Luckily I had my kit with me and jumped at the chance, calling in sick for my placement I had one of the most thrilling, exciting, nerve wracking days of my life. Amy loved her make up so much on the shoot she asked me to come back to her apartment and do her make up similar for her appearance at The Hunger Games Film Premier that evening. This was all so surreal but so electrifying, I knew this was what I was put here to do. Make people look and feel beautiful.

After doing Amy’s make up for the premier, I went straight back to my hostel, packed my bag and got on the first train back to Manchester. Whilst on the train I wrote out a detailed letter of resignation from my courses. Some people say I was crazy, 6 days from finishing, but I knew it was the right thing to do. I couldn’t turn down any opportunities and I knew this was going to work.
